To remove any of the confusion over the new Gambler Skill, Gateway Drug, we've created this page to help those struggling to understand it.
This refers to effects that toss a coin once. It's either Heads or Tails. These are the simplest to understand, for Gateway Drug you can simply predict what you believe the result of the coin toss will be.
All the "Arcana Force" monsters such as Arcana Force XIX - The Sun, and cards like Cup of Ace fall into this area.
This refers to effects that toss a coin multiple times. There's different types of cards like this and they are handled in similar ways. Effects like this require you to predict based on the possible outcomes of that effect.
What do we mean by outcome? Let's use an example card, Gambler of Legend. We can see from its effect, Gambler of Legend tosses a coin 3 times and applies an effect based on the result. It has 4 different effects that can be applied, which means for Gateway Drug you predict which of the four effects it will be.
Blowback Dragon is another example of this, with a simpler choice. For Blowback Dragon there are two possible outcomes for the effect: The targeted card is destroyed, or not destroyed.
There are cards like Snipe Hunter that function basically identically to this, but roll a die instead. Works the same way for Gateway Drug.
Now not all cards are as simple. Orgoth the Relentless rolls a die 3 times, and has multiple effects you could be predicting. So here's how something like Orgoth the Relentless works:
First, you have the choice on what to predict. You can either predict the ATK/DEF gain Orgoth will receive, OR you can predict which of his effects will be applied. With the effects, it's possible none of them will be applied, so you can also predict that outcome.
The other part you're allowed to predict on is cards that randomly discard, most notably the Danger! monsters. For these types of cards, it's once again about choosing the different outcomes.
With Danger! Bigfoot! for example, when using its effect you will either discard or Special Summon it. A simple two choice effect.
